About Jon Shore

I have been a practicing psychotherapist in clinical and private practice since 1978.
I completed my post-graduate studies in 1978 and spent a year as a resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital and then did many years of clinical work at various hospitals and clinics. Additional trainings included; therapeutic uses of altered states of consciousness, meditation, mind-body connections, hypnotherapy, self-awareness, sleep studies, psychological aspects of cancer therapy, trauma therapy, stress reduction, clinical depression and anxiety.

Over the past 47 years I have also been a teacher, advisor, coach, researcher and author, but the thread running through all of it has been the same: helping people find their way out of suffering and into a life that is fulfilling and joyous.

I work with people online via video conferencing, from wherever they are and I am in the world. I have been doing that for twenty-five years, since video conferencing became easily available.

What I do

I practice what I call Self-Awareness Therapy — an approach built over decades of working with clients and tested many thousands of times. It draws on meditation, mindfulness and a non-religious spiritual understanding of who we actually are.

To be clear; This work is not religious. There is no doctrine, no belief you are asked to accept, and nothing you need to have faith in. If you are not a spiritual person, or you simply want practical help with depression and nothing more — that is entirely enough, and we can work that way.

I help people with depression, anxiety, stress and stress-related disorders, PTSD and trauma, self-esteem, fear, anger, addictions, and the emotional weight that comes with illness and difficult relationships.

Why depression, particularly

Because I have been there.

I spent three years in severe clinical depression while I was already a psychotherapist in private practice. Antidepressants did not help me. I stopped seeing clients because I did not believe I could help anyone when I could not help myself. I needed someone living in my house to cook and pay the bills, because I could not do those things for myself.

I cured depression. Not through medication, but through the work I now do with others.

My clients have always known that I understand what they are describing from the inside, not from a textbook. That is why they listened to me, and it is why I have been able to help hundreds of people out of the same place.

I have written about that time in detail here: What Severe Depression Actually Feels Like

Meditation, mindfulness and enlightenment

Alongside my clinical work I teach meditation and mindfulness, and I write about spiritual awakening and enlightenment from direct experience rather than theory.

I work with organizations, businesses and groups internationally on meditation, mindfulness, dealing with emotions, empathy and self-awareness — as lectures, workshops and training programs, in person or online.

Working with me

I see clients privately via Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp, wherever they are.
